TOTAL RECALL

Tresor Club, 1991 - 2005: the undisputed cult home of the techno genre and implicator for the launching of a new musical generation; partly responsible for the reintegration of the younger generation in east and west Berlin. Never has a club carried around so much word-of-mouth propaganda than this decaying, rudimentary bank remnant, creating the framework for unforgettable experiences in musical freedom. The intoxicating dance pleasure is, with its music program, more formative than any other club. Now with its Leipzigerstrasse home base gone with the wrecker ball, only time and the future will dictate the future of the Tresor Club Experience.

Tresor is also the starting point and inspiration for one of the most important international labels existing in Germany, perhaps not always over-prolific in releases but nevertheless stylistically impressive in its uncompromising significance in the world of electronic music.

Hardly a famous techno artist or DJ has not played in Tresor Club since its screeching birth from the dungeons in 1991. For a personal tribute to Tresor Club, we have approached many of these artists, Tresor residents and prominent figures in the international electronic dance music scene, to ask them about their memories, feelings and comments concerning the passing of a legendary techno dwelling.

Tresor expresses its deep gratitude to the following persons who agreed to participate in this nostalgic survey of one of modern music’s most notable eras.

The Advent / Cisco Ferreira - (Producer & DJ / London)

How do you think Tresor Club has contributed to the development of club culture for young people in Germany?

It’s the Holy Grail of electronic music in Germany, releasing cutting-edge music since the onset. Without Tresor Club or Records, Germany would be a fucking dead zone...

What is one of your most memorable Tresor Club experiences during its 14 year history?

Loveparade weekend 1998: it took me 30 min. to get downstairs to watch Claude Young, he was absolutely covered in sweat, the place was a sauna. Last time I saw anything like this was back in the late 80's in London during the warehouse parties...

Alan Oldham aka DJ T-1000 - (DJ/Producer / USA / www.alanoldham.com)

How do you think Tresor Club has contributed to the development of club culture for young people in Germany?

I don't know much about the German club scene before Tresor, but it seems like Tresor has been the focal point for electronic music in Germany. There are other big clubs in Germany in the present day, of course, but it seems to me that Tresor was the trend-setter. It definitely introduced the Detroit sound to German audiences.

What is one of your most memorable Tresor Club experiences during its 14 year history?

My Tresor Park appearances during Love Parade weekend hold very special memories for me. A lot of enthusiastic dancers and being reunited with good friends from all over the world. I was also very honoured by my three-year involvement with Musikundmaschine.

DJ Bleed - (Chief editor, DeBug Magazine / Berlin, Germany)

How do you think Tresor Club has contributed to the development of club culture for young people in Germany?

Tresor has definitely been the club that set the parameters for all of those dedicated to music as a physical experience rather then something being contemplated. It turned all fan-dom into shreds and made these shreds move. And as such it has been in my bloodstream ever since and will be forever.

What is one of your most memorable Tresor Club experiences during its 14 year history?

Being there for the first time (back in 91/92, I don't remember exactly): seeing Jeff rushing, flying through the records in speeds unknown.

Chris Liebing - (DJ & Producer / Germany / www.cl-rec.com)

How do you think Tresor Club has contributed to the development of club culture for young people in Germany?

World-wide Tresor has had an Impact on club culture. Wherever I go in the world, people have heard about the Tresor Club. Speaking to people now, some even consider flying to Berlin in order to give Tresor one last visit. It has been and will be a historical place in Techno History. Everyone who has been there has his own special history with the club. For me I can only say, as I walked out of Tresor at noon on the 15th of July in 1996 after playing the basement the whole night, I said to myself "now I understand Techno..."

What is one of your most memorable Tresor Club experiences during its 14 year history?

I got loads of memorable days and nights at Tresor. But the Night I got to play there the fist time on the Sunday night after the Loveparade in 1996 was for me quite outstanding. I wasn't even planned in to play that night. It was the Harthouse 100 Tour with Oliver Bondzio, Pauli, Good Groove, Der Dritte Raum and Patrick Lindsay.

Cristian Vogel - (DJ, live artist - No-Future, Tresor Rec. / Barcelona)

How do you think Tresor Club has contributed to the development of club culture for young people in Germany?

Tresor Club, Berlin, has been like some kind of focus for European techno, some guiding light to young people and folk who are new to this music we call techno. Tresor Club was organic and developed its own style, and the best part is that this trashy old punk bunker – a subversion of a bank – became the benchmark for authentic techno culture: a dirty anarchic space, a safe and tolerant place, open to anything yet controlling itself and always with a close-knit community around it. Only in Berlin could this place have ever existed, that’s true.

What is one of your most memorable Tresor Club experiences during its 14 year history?

Lots of memories… So many friends, such a lot of laughs and a ton of booze… I remember doing this live show at one of the Loveparades, out in the garden with my Amiga. During the chaos Tresor forgot to provide a TV for me to use. Dimitri went home and got his 21” TV and I did my show. Next day, we came back and the party’s still going in the garden, and there’s the TV on a table covered in dust with ravers dancing around it… In truth, I always found spinning downstairs to be a difficult job. I was never really sure that I had played my best ‘cuz it wasn’t the most comfortable DJ booth in the world, what with chunks of the ceiling falling on the decks, no air, and constant strobe lights in your face. But the effort of playing down there was always rewarding, the shapes on the dance floor feeding back pure organic energy. On more than one occasion, I felt that Tresor was easily the most futuristic space on Earth. Fuck all those fancy mirrored high rise buildings – down in the dungeon and outside in the dust: that’s where modernity was really being defined. Money can’t buy love. Viva Tresor!

I’ll never foget Loveparade 1996: I was the starting DJ at 11pm. After my first record the whole place seemed ready to explode, I couldn’t hear my monitor anymore, only the roar of the people. After ten minutes the moisture was dripping from the ceiling. It was just unbelievable!

Dave Tarrida - (DJ / Producer, Barcelona)

How do you think Tresor Club has contributed to the development of club culture for young people in Germany?

From being one of the original techno clubs in Germany, being there throughout, putting on 3 or 4 parties a week, up until today. Tresor, as well as being a benchmark for clubs and labels in Germany, has always to me, been one of the only organisations who will always book all the top names in the industry, but also book aspiring DJs from clubs all over Germany. This I think is a good contribution to club culture.

What is one of your most memorable Tresor Club experiences during its 14 year history?

I think the best time I ever played Tresor was the first Loveparade I played. I can’t remember the year, maybe ‘97, it was the year Bones, Adam X and Heather played, and Neil was also playing... this one just stands out as one of those special nights.

How do you think Tresor Club has contributed to the development of club culture for young people in Germany?

I suppose we gave a good example of being bad. Maybe Tresor helped people to learn, that it was alright to pass out once in a while and have a good time going down to where it's dark and dirty. It gave a signal that you gotta get in to get out.

What is one of your most memorable Tresor Club experiences during its 14 year history?

Working the bar downstairs, watching Kraftwerk standing around staring without anybody noticing them. Es wird immer weitergehen / it will always go on...

(English text)
Tresor was different then. Tresor didn’t have a clear face. It began as UFO in the Köpenickerstrasse. In the basement there were weekly illegal parties and through the UFO-2 on Kleistpark, with its Acid sound, techno nights became known over the years at its steady Leipzigerstrasse address. Tresor was always on the pulse of the times and never bowed to any trends. It didn’t matter how many different people and new faces from around the world came to discover Tresor – it always just stayed Tresor. The club never bent in any direction to please anyone. Tresor always stayed open for new ideas without betraying itself nor techno’s identity. Tresor is classic and world famous. Something like this can only find itself in Berlin. Lastly, because of the fall of the Berlin Wall so many new chic locations opened for the young techno scene but high-class and techno have never made a good mixture.

(English text)
I have many memories from Tresor Club. Whether it’s the Interference Festival or the Sunday After-Hours, my Bonito House dance therapy on Wednesdays or downstairs in the basement where the bass and the fog helped to dissolve into a community experience. When I think about it, these are some moments that produce feelings in me like being taken in my mother’s arms and sense the absolute safety and freedom. Whenever I hear certain traxx, I smell the Tresor fog and see the rusty safe-deposit boxes downstairs...

How do you think Tresor Club has contributed to the development of club culture for young people in Germany?

The label and the club formed a meeting place that was important for musicians, artists and dancers could share experiences or flip out with scorching sounds. Tresor was the base for the new sounds of the 90’s.

Tresor made techno big and gave the newcomers a base. There hasn’t been a locale in Berlin that lasted so long. I have been very affected by Tresor and it was there that I realized what it means to rock out and bring the dance floor to a boil. Jeff Mills, Juan Atkins, Blake Baxter: I heard them all for the first time in Tresor and it was this music that always made me feel whole. I have always loved DJ’ing or dancing there, to this very day. Tresor is the absolute club that brought people together while flipping out on the music. The dance floor vibrates and doesn’t allow a second of stillness. Without Tresor and Fishlabor I probably wouldn’t have become a DJ. Tresor gave us the courage to become active!

Oh mein Gott.
Danke Tresor!

Oh my God. I knew the club when Globus was still a little club upstairs, then at some point the walls were eliminated and the place was suddenly 6 times as big. A few years I played with Tanith every Sunday in Globus, “Club The Rest” and what happened there was unbelievable. I got to know so many people and some of them have remained friends until today.

The best for me was always Loveparade Sunday afternoon in Globus. The whole world seemed to gather there! Another memory is the 60 hours Braincandy live from Tresor. It was broadcast 60 hours live from the club with amusing interviews that I was doing. Tresor is cult and it’s sad that it’s closed. In my head there will always be a noise-induced memory, an important one that helps make the right decisions about what Berlin is and what it was. This I won’t ever forget. Thank you Tresor!

The Tresor club was like no other place on the planet. It had a great vibe and was a great launching pad for ideas.

What is one of your most memorable Tresor Club experiences during its 14 year history?

I enjoyed playing there every time and there’s too many to count. So I will go with the very first time I played there back in 1991 ( I came over with the R&S crew). The club was just a few months old and the place was full of energy.

John Acquaviva - (Plus8 / Canada)

How do you think Tresor Club has contributed to the development of club culture for young people in Germany?

Tresor was one of the first clubs to invite and showcase electonic music and artists form all over the world to Berlin and Germany as a whole. It was always down to earth and never too serious, but because of that it was maybe the most honest club around.

What is one of your most memorable Tresor Club experiences during its 14 year history?

So many. My first time in 1991 I remember hearing about this amazing place only to go and find a simple dark room with giant thundering sound. Once there I understood and saw the simplicity in the madness and craziness then, I had many great nights as an invited artist. For me it was playing at the Globus for a handful of years on Thursday nights for the Loveparade weekend pre-parties to get the weekend started. One of those nights Richie Hawtin showed up unannounced and as a surprise and we played all night. The only thing is that about an hour into our set the power went out for about 10 minutes. The place was packed and we were in total darkness. The crowd just cheered for all that time and then when the power came back, cheered even louder!

What is one of your most memorable Tresor Club experiences during its 14 year history?

My first night was at the end of ‘95 and I had to play 10 hours in Globus because there was no after hour DJ. But I was lucky because I had a second record case in my car, so no problem. And the party was amazing. Later on I only played in the basement, and this basement had the most energy I ever found in clubs around the world.

Pacou - (Tresor Rec., Autofokus / Berlin)

How do you think Tresor Club has contributed to the development of club culture for young people in Germany?

Tresor is certainly one of the few key locations where dance music and club culture of the 90’s was shaped and defined. Everything in 2005’s consumer world has a little bit out from there, from mobile phone ringtones to TV program jingles. Tresor’s crowds have grown up with Playstation games and the beat of the infamous TR 909 drum machine – it comes natural nowadays – but was a revolution that started right from X-101 at Tresor. From my view, only a small percentage of the true potential and impact of the club has been realised but the intensity and magic could be felt by everyone there.

What is one of your most memorable Tresor Club experiences during its 14 year history?

Too many to mention! The first nights there I clearly remember were Moby playing Live on a "Twin Peaks" theme night, and a night with local heroes Tanith and Dominic Woosey in 1991. When Jeff Mills played I only remember it was one of the loudest sets I heard, with a tube shaped Bose speaker system, it was so loud that the glasses and bottles at the bar shook and fell down. When I started playing at the club in 1995, the best nights I remember were with Gene Farris and Rush, the UR crew on their return (meeting Mike Banks), and some live-acts that were quite intense, especially when I played with Carl Past from Austria (Bass Guitar), it was a killer. The club had ups and downs but the ending proved that after 14 years the energy was still there.

Ralf Stucki - (Tresor Club Manager)

How do you think Tresor Club has contributed to the development of club culture for young people in Germany?

For us, Tresor was in the beginning a real hip, happening place but as different generations of club people emerged, the club began to accept new and different guests and faces. Many people say that Tresor became old-fashioned or out of style but it is exactly this that kept us alive: each generation discovered the ambience and music that is typically Tresor and their appreciation kept the spirit alive.

What is one of your most memorable Tresor Club experiences during its 14 year history?

I had come to Berlin from Switzerland in 1993 and since I had heard about Tresor, decided to make my way down there. The first time I didn’t make it in – maybe it was my long hair! – so I cut it off a few days later and returned to the club. This time I made it in and went downstairs to find Sven Väth on the decks and this fantastic, damp, dark and musty atmosphere. The music was so incredible I was speechless and I ended up dancing non-stop for some 10+ hours in amazement. Luckily the bar staff kept giving me water and when I ended up in the street at noon, wearing what originally were white pants, no taxi would take me and I ended up walking to Ku’Damm. But I was from then on enthralled with this unbelievable, non-compromising way of delivering music and lifestyle – no glam, go glitz, go gloss – just the music.

(English text below)

(English text)
Tresor began as a culture shock. The guests were so excited from the total differentness of the raw basement look that sprouted Tresor clones like mushrooms everywhere. Hardly a an East German vault space was spared when a PA was set up, a DJ shipped in and suddenly “a cool location” for techno parties was born. Also, playing techno through the entire night was in 1991 not really that possible in most clubs: Tresor turned the dance world inside out. The deciding steps in techno’s evolution were found here. Over the years Tresor recognised trends but remained still. It kept its function as a secure orientation point in the ever-growing and unmanageablely increasing scene. Tresor was by far the most important club in the entire techno culture. This place really meant something.

There were moments in the first weeks of the newly opened Tresor, when it became clear to me that we were not only having a great party under there: a truly big, new club and youth culture was emerging and we were experiencing it. How do you think Tresor Club has contributed to the development of club culture for young people in Germany?

Well in my opinion I would say Tresor has been a strong force in the techno industry. Thoughout my years of travelling and DJ’ing, I've heard many people speak about Tresor in so many positive ways and many people have wished to dance on Tresor grounds. As a matter of FACT, not only did I want to play there, I wanted to also leave a mark of having a great night that would stay in peoples minds. Tresor has opened doors for many artists – new, old, young – and made the legends that they are today. I’m a big fan of the German dance scene, and Tresor was the only club I could go to on my time off and hear the music I was playing or close to what I’m playing. I never witnessed another club in Berlin that gave the people a chance to witness or feel really hard techno in such an underground area. Tresor has really saved Berlin's underground scene in my opinion , Tresor has never turned its back on the underground scene or polished their club to fit mainstream standards, and this is why so many people will and always respect TRESOR and miss it, and I’m proud to have been a part of it.

What is one of your most memorable Tresor Club experiences during its 14 year history?

Hmmmm… my most memorable Tresor experience… I have 2 actually. My first was in 1997 when I played with Gene Farris (from Chicago). Maybe a year earlier. It was so nice to see people having fun to Chicago house music. My other moment was last year when I played 7 1/2 hours in the Keller..... I didn't want to stop, the people were
screaming and going crazy, it was so dark and hot, I felt like I was in a Chicago underground party. After that event I said I must do it again...

I think it opened a lot of minds and expanded peoples’ horizons as to what to expect at a techno night...it also brought people from all over the world to Berlin, making it a big part of the international electronic music community...I'd say it also pretty much single-handedly brought the Detroit underground to Europe, being one of the first big clubs to support UR, Jeff Mills etc...

What is one of your most memorable Tresor Club experiences during its 14 year history?

Probably Loveparade ‘98 I think? Not sure which year it was...I was with Cristian Vogel and Matt Black from Coldcut (who was trying to sleep in his campervan down the road). We were on the Tresor outdoor stage.Vogel was about to play his first record (this was 8 in the morning) when all the power went down. The crowd patiently waited an hour whilst some guy with a mullet called Wolf tried to fix it. The basement was totally rammed, hot and pitch black – it was chaos. Then Cristian put the 1st record on when the power was back up: everybody went crazy and the record was a brand new one I lent him that day by DJ Rush called Slam Jack on Kne' deep. It was a nice moment...

Either that or the time me and Shandy had to play for 8 hours back to back in the basement to 10 guys from Poland!

How do you think Tresor Club has contributed to the development of club culture for young people in Germany?

I can't answer this one.

What is one of your most memorable Tresor Club experiences during its 14 year history?

Loveparade 2002, I was playing downstairs, and the heat and humidity was causing my sampler to crash every 30 seconds or so. I would look at the screen and it was only flashing random hexadecimal numbers. So, I'd reboot and play for another brief interval before going through the whole cycle again. I was going crazy with frustration, but the audience was loving it. They were screaming their approval every time it failed. I probably should have set it on fire that night.

What is one of your most memorable Tresor Club experiences during its 14 year history?

My 3-year monthly residency at Tresor from '97 to '99 is something that I will always remember fondly. Playing there every month played a vital part in my learning and development as a DJ.

How do you think Tresor Club has contributed to the development of club culture for young people in Germany?

I can honestly say we did our best to screw a whole generation, that includes me ;-)

What is one of your most memorable Tresor Club experiences during its 14 year history?

There are two outstanding memories: when UR came to play the Tresor for the first time, after I did the first European interview with them and we became comrades in an instant, because of the same mindset and clothes.

Second was after the Chromapark party at Ewerk, when I arrived with about 150 people at 9am at the closed door of Tresor and a irritated crew was asking what we wanted. We just wanted to go on a little further, they allowed it and it was one of the best afterhours ever.
