Biography:

Todd Bodine is a well-known race car driver. Contrary to his namesake, another Todd Bodine, the well-known German electronic music artist, paves his way in the international techno/house scene.

Born in Berlin, Todd Bodine already began to take on his own musical tastes at the age of 17. Just after the fall of the Berlin Wall he discovered a fascination for the young, techno club scene in Berlin, bought some records, practiced alone at home and began to establish himself as DJ at private parties. As it happened, in 1997 he met Daniel Paul in his favourite record store, who would later become his friend and mentor. This was the inception of Cabinet Records, for which Todd would begin producing his own music two years later. But first he was busy DJ’ing with Daniel Paul in Berlin clubs like Rosenthaler 59, Casino and WMF, until 1997 when he found his home base in the legendary Tresor Club. It was there that he delivered his best energetic sets until 2005 when the club closed.

Yet Todd Bodine wanted more. He began together with Daniel Paul to produce his own first tracks. Inspired from this work, he set up his own home studio in 1997, from which his first solo house project was born (Travel EP – Cabinet Records 019). In the next two years he released further conjoint productions on Cabinet Records and on Mermaid Records (Slope – Mermaid 001, Cabinet Allstarts – Cabinet Records 20).

Through his job as Tresor Club resident DJ, he gained even more contacts and eventually in 2002 he moved to the Rampe D studio to further develop his music. At that time he met the Berlin DJ icon Tom Clark (Highgrade Records) and thereby laid the groundwork for his extended career. Todd’s track on the compilation “Various Artists – Highgrade Records 008” saw the start of a new professional co-operation with the Highgrade label. From that time on he released a track every year, and the Digital Madness Series was born. Through his friendship with Tom Clark he met Stefan Riesen who immediately expressed interest in Todd Bodine’s tracks. This lead to the first maxi on Morris Audio Citysport in 2003 (System of Society – Morris Audio Citysport Edition 002).

Enthusiastic about Todd’s talent, Stefan Riesen gave some tracks to Apoll Tongut. On this small Swiss label Todd released his third maxi for the year (Moments Between – Tongut 009).

Then the Tresor Records label began to show interest in its seasoned club DJ resident. In 2002/2003 Todd Bodine released his first tracks on Tresor Records (Headquarters Berlin: Various Artists – Tresor.197; Tresor Compilation Volume 12: Illumination – Tresor.212). Numerous releases on Highgrade compilations followed. Together with Tom Clark and James Flavour, he played at Highgrade label nights in diverse clubs. Through his booking agency Clique Bookings, his international career began to flourish.

In 2004 Todd Bodine again made further significant steps. He began to play (DJ) digitally with Scratch Live (Serato), achieving a new dimension for himself and his work. Gradually he started playing in clubs throughout Germany, Italy, France, Great Britain, Sweden and Austria. In what had been his most important year – 2005 – he couldn’t only concentrate on international gigs because he was also busy releasing his debut album “Different Engines” on Morris Audio Citysport. At the same time Todd began to produce remixes for Highgrade Records and Morris Audio Citysport. He then released two maxis on Tresor Records (Life Signs EP and Particles EP). Both tracks were forerunners of his Tresor album “Surfaces” that was released in the beginning of 2006.

Interview with Todd Bodine (May 2005)

(English version below)

(English version)

It was kind of a long time coming with your new release „Life Signs” on Tresor. When did you actually start to construct the tracks for the maxi?

I actually started working on the tracks about 3 years ago. The number of tracks just came as I went along. The first track that I finished was “Contact”. The last one I produced was “Monkey Rabbit”. I think it’s important that the pieces function just as well after a long lapse of time. In this aspect, it is no longer important ‘when’ the track is made. Vital is that the music rocks.

How did you hook up with John Tejada on this project?

I got to know John awhile back when I met him through Daniel Bell. When I was asked who should do the remix, I immediately thought of John because I like his tracks very much. And besides, I think it turned out quite complimentary.

The style of this EP distinguishes itself quite clearly from your other works – do you feel this way as well?

No not really. It’s only more minimal but the style is the same. I can be a bit more technoid on Tresor Records but I retain nevertheless melodic elements. In this aspect one can really recognize an alignment. And this is how my fans can get to know another musical side of me, and when someone’s surprised - so much the better.

You are one of the original members of the Tresor Headquarters team. Are you still active with this project?

No, I was really never a Headquarters member. That would be a bit presumptuous to just throw me into that lot. I only played once at a Headquarters night very early on in my career (as test). I find that what they are doing (Headquarters) and their ideas really super. I don’t know of any club that sponsors such a star searching concept.

What was your impression of Tresor Club’s last parties and how did this affect you?

I can hardly describe this in words. They were the best nights that I’ve experienced in Tresor/Globus. I had never really felt such an energy like this before. Through this experience I had a really nice personal conclusion but this didn’t necessarily influence me. It was like the Loveparade, only PHATTER and LONGER.

Are you still experiencing strong influences from other kinds of electronic music today?

I listen to a lot of music. Lots of jazz and the like. This inspires me just as much as electronic music. I think that this flows into my tracks rather unconsiously.

What about collaborations with other electronic artists – anything in scope?

For sure there’ll be one or more collaborations.

Would you consider releasing a full-length album?

I just released my first album on Morris Audio Citysport: “Different Engines”.
